There are two restrictions to which user-defined properties are subject. First, because the properties are defined as an XML snippet, they have to conform to the rules of a well-formed XML document. Second, each property must be entered as a name-value pair. Nested properties are not supported. The Report Server offers a pair of methods that you can use to manipulate the catalog item properties, as follows: GetProperties Returns both reserved and user-defined properties. The reserved properties correspond to the properties of the CatalogItem class, which is returned from a call to GetChildren. Similarly to using a SQL WHERE clause to filter out the data at a database level, you can optionally pass a filter to the Report Server to get only a subset of the user-defined properties. SetProperties Updates the catalog item properties. Of course, you can update the Property column manually at your own risk. To do so, you need to scroll down in the Property cell for the given report and enter the new property element, abiding by the XML syntax rules. If you make errors in the property syntax, the call to the GetProperties method will fail. Once again, the recommended approach to making changes to the report catalog is through the SOAP API, which in this case is SetProperties. For the purposes of the Report Wizard demo, we use a couple of custom properties, as shown in table 10.4.

Software exploitations were covered in detail in 6 and 8. As you probably recall from those chapters, buffer overflows are the most common exploit discovered. In addition to buffer overruns, there are many other types of software vulnerabilities, including cross-site scripting, in which Web sites inadvertently include malicious Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) code in their Web pages. Attackers often place the code there in successful attempts at compromising the Web page. This issue is described in CERT Advisory CA-2000-02, "Malicious HTML Tags Embedded in Client Web Requests," available at http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2000-02.html. The SANS organization and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) maintain a list of the top 20 reported vulnerabilities at http://www.sans.org/top20. This Web location also includes links to resources to help you discover these vulnerabilities and increase the security of your network. Social Engineering Social engineering was introduced in 1, and subsequently discussed throughout the book, as any method of attack that relies on the deception or exploitation of people. The example scenario presented in 1 illustrates a situation in which an attacker could compromise a user's password. A common way for an attacker to do this is to pretend to be part of the technical support staff for the organization. The attacker then contacts a user, explaining that he or she needs the user's password to perform some maintenance or troubleshooting activity on that user's system or the network.

Table 10.4 Reporting Services allows developers to associate custom properties with catalog items. Property CustomParameters Type Boolean Purpose If CustomParameters is true, the Report Wizard will handle the report parameters. Example <CustomParameters>True </CustomParameters> continued on next page

Many other forms of social engineering exist, most conducted over the telephone. However, an attacker might be bold enough to take a part-time job cleaning offices, for example, to search for passwords that are written down. Employees should be advised that company security is in their hands (as explained in

10). They must realize that writing a password down or giving it to someone else puts the whole organization's information security systems at risk.

So, this is easy. If you need the Report Wizard to handle the report parameters for you, you can add a new CustomParameters property to the list of properties and set its value to True. Similarly, if a given report needs to be generated by SOAP, you can add a RemoteCall property and set its value to true. Once again, these are user-defined properties, so don t expect to find them in the product documentation or when you install the sample reports. Instead, you have to manually add them to the Property column of the report you need to test. To help you configure the Report Wizard sample, we provided a script file (SetProperties.rss.), which you can find under the 10 folder in the AWReporterWin project. To run the script, go to the command prompt and navigate to the folder where SetProperties.rss is located. Then, assuming that the Report Server is installed locally and the folder where the sample reports are located is called AWReporter, type the following command:

rs -i SetProperties.rss -s http://localhost/reportserver -v folderPath="AWReporter"
